A native Vermonter, born and raised in Morrisville, VT, Norm Wolfe's guitar playing has graced the North Country for the past four decades. He has performed regularly at the Canoe Club in Hanover, and sits in on guitar as often as his schedule will allow with the acclaimed Vermont Jazz ensemble. He previously held a trumpet chair with the group. His work as music director for the Hartford and Dresden School Districts has been widely praised by students and parents alike. He performed with major rock groups throughout Vermont before choosing jazz as his venue.

Bassist Peter Concillo, as a young player, was inspired and encouraged by Connecticut tenor player Don DeFala, with whom he worked for many years. He retired to the Upper Valley in 2001, following a career teaching English, Philosophy and Film, and promoting jazz concerts. This summer he taught "Keeping the Jazz Journal" to participants at Fred Hass and Sabrina Brown's" Interplay Jazz Camp," and is currently working as executive producer of pianist Eugene Uman's new CD, which is slated for release next year.

Wednesday, September 2 – Evan Carey

Born in Lebanon, NH, Evan has lived in Spain since 2005 where he
studies and works as a flamenco guitarist under world-renowned master
'El Entri' Aquilino Jimenez. He holds a diploma from Madrid's dedicated flamenco school, Amor de Dios, where he accompanies flamenco song and dance and perfects solo technique. He plays a variety of classic flamenco compositions by Paco de Lucia, Mario Escudero and Sabicas and also performs original material. He will be in the Upper Valley area for a limited time before returning to Spain in September 2009.

Thursday, September 3 – Doug Henry

Henry's acoustic blend of original and retro favorites represents an enthusiastic, eclectic journey from 60s classics to 70s folk, including a new chapter featuring his own songs.

Saturday, September 5 – David Newsam and Emily Musty

Em has also performed in musical groups such as ONE EYE OPEN, Sweet Medicine, and with guitar virtuoso David Newsam singing classic and contemporary jazz, folk and pop tunes from Diana Krall, Eva Cassidy and Nora Jones. Songs in the Key of Em , Em's first album with David Newsam is currently available.

David resides in Manchester, NH and teaches guitar at Dartmouth College, Berklee College of Music, and the University of New Hampshire. He recently returned from a tour of Germany with the Back Bay Guitar Trio.

Cindy performs and entertaining combination of originals and covers. Her original songs weave her absorbing and memorable stories with intricate melodies and guitar playing. David is a solo singer and guitarist who has been performing publicly for more than 30 years. Before moving to the Upper Valley, David lived in Boston where he performed in many venues. His style is a mix of Classic Rock, American Songbook Standards and Folk.

R Lee is the music director/organist of St. James' Episcopal Church in Woodstock. He has music degrees from Oberlin and Yale. He stylizes jazz with classical idiom, fluid lines, and new age rhythms. Matt Getman a regular in the Upper Valley jazz scene brings an earthy laid back yet explosive energy to the mix often singing to ya and kicking ya at the same time

Tuesday August 25 – Ken Rokicki

Ken performs solo acoustic and electric guitar. He plays the standards and ballads of Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hammerstein, Duke Ellington, and Miles Davis to name a few. Ken also performs his original compositions, which he describes as "Nouveaux Flamenco." It is a hybrid style which combines classical and Flamenco styles on a 12 – string guitar. These compositions provide the ideal musical ambiance.

Wednesday August 26 – Tony Mason

Born in New York City, Tony has a background in folk and blues as well as classical music. His voice is a unique and powerful instrument that he is able to use skillfully. His songs are worldly and personal as well as topical. His warmth makes listening to his performance an exciting experience. The effect is often that of personally touching each member of his audience and sharing that sense of embrace. At any performance you might hear Tony playing his own original work, traditional folk and blues and songs by other artists.

Jambalaya is a three-piece group that consists of a piano, harmonica, and a female vocalist. The band specializes in the blues of varied origin.

Marty Young plays the piano and has been honky tonkin' in the Upper Valley professionally for 20 plus years, and has played with some of the Upper Valley's most well known party and dance bands.

David Nalepinski migrated from playing the drums to playing harmonica. Over the last few years he has been developing his harmonica blues chops and has found his own pure tone.

Kayla Fellows, the youngest of the group, has had 6 plus years of professional vocal coaching and is natural talent. Kayla is sought out for her smooth and controlled singing voice and is always well received at public events such as singing the National Anthem at ball games and motor racing events.

He has appeared on the Tonight Show and has played with members of the Counting Crows, Bare Naked Ladies, and Dead Kennedys among others at various times in his career. He is also an Emmy Award winning composer and a popular guitar teacher in Hanover.

In New Orleans, a city known worldwide for its music, Samirah was one of its most popular jazz & blues vocalists. She first performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1990, and became a regular fixture as either a leader or featured vocalist for fourteen consecutive years. She has toured Europe, Asia, and both North and South America as a headliner, and shared stages with a multitude of legendary artists from B.B. King and James Brown, to New Orleans own Queen of Soul, Irma Thomas. Mark Kross on piano and David Westphalen on bass will join Samirah.

Tony Mason is a guitarist and vocalist who has worked as a professional musician for the last 40 years. His experience includes club and concert work as well as school programs from kindergarten to college. He has performed with bands but primarily he works as a solist accompanying himself with guitar and own midi sequences.

Born in New york City, Tony has a background in folk and blues as well as classical music. His voice is a unique and powerful instrumeny that he is able to use skillfully. His songs are both worldly and personal as well as topical. His warmth makes listening to his performance an exciting experience. The effect is often that of personally touching each member of his audience and sharing that sense of embace. At any performance you might hear Tony playing his own original work, traditional folk and blues and songs by other artists.

ELIXIR at The Freight House, the Upper Valley's premier destination for fine
dining and live music, proudly presents the return of one of New York City's
fastest rising stars - elizabeth! - an amazingly talented jazz vocalist and
trombonist who performs with her father, DAVID WESTPHALEN, on bass, and FRED
HAAS on piano, on Thursday, June 18th, 2008, from 8 to 11 pm.
Vocalist and trombonist elizabeth! is one of the most in-demand bandleaders
and side musicians in New York City. Her working band performs her sultry
arrangements of jazz standards as well as her catchy original tunes, and her
new recording, "hot & silver," shows off her beautiful phrasing and
sensitivity. Her musicianship and enthusiasm (and dance moves) have made her
a popular choice for tours and recordings with artists in genres ranging
from country to indie rock to hip-hop. In April of 2008 she performed with
her own quintet at New York's Jazz @ Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club Coca
Cola. She has made appearances at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, and Lincoln
Center, and on "Good Morning America" with the Metro Mass Gospel Choir and
has toured with St. Vincent, opening for The Arcade Fire. Currently she
tours with Michael Bolton. elizabeth! has performed with the Rebirth and
Dirty Dozen Brass Bands at the Blue Note, Wetlands, B.B. King's, and the
Knitting Factory, and has done radio commercial work and recording with
countless artists, including The Mooney Suzuki, Chris Potter, Matt Wilson,
and Money Mark of the Beastie Boys.
Before dropping her last name for a mark of punctuation (!), Elizabeth
Dotson-Westphalen grew up in a very musical family in Woodstock, Vermont,
garnering accolades in both music and theater. While at Harvard University,
she studied cognitive neuroscience and psychology and immersed herself in
the Boston music scene. She played lead trombone with the Harvard Jazz Band,
under the direction of Tom Everett, and performed with many of the top names
in jazz; a particularly special concert featured Randy Weston and
Elizabeth's recreation of Melba Liston's "My Reverie." Other activities
included touring with the nutty Hasty Pudding Theatricals, directing the
jazz department and spinning records at WHRB, and playing a weekly gig with
a drag queen. (So much for the typical ivory tower education!) She has
studied with Phil Wilson, Sheila Jordan, JD Walter, Michael Philip Mossman,
and Antonio Hart - mostly through the curriculum at Queens College, where
she earned a Master's Degree in Jazz Vocal Performance in 2006.

Known for her powerful, soulful vocals, Dixie Eastridge has toured and recorded with many well-known artists such as Tracy Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Denny Doherty (Mamas & Papas), James Cotton, Phil Wiggins, and Eva Cassidy. Mike Melvoin has been playing the piano since he was three and jazz since he was 13 and has never stopped. His legendary career in the studios of Los Angeles as a player, arranger, composer, conductor, producer and recording artist continues at the highest level. His credits and collaborations are the Who’s Who of music, ranging from Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, Stan Getz, Tony Bennett and Joe Williams to Quincy Jones, John Lennon, Tom Waits, Cher and the Beach Boys. Credits also include a long list of television and film scores, specials and documentaries. Melvoin was the first active musician to serve as president of the Recording Academy, the organization responsible for awarding the GRAMMYs. Fred Haas, a Dartmouth grad (’73) who teaches saxophone, jazz piano, improvisation, jazz history, and music theory at Dartmouth College, has performed throughout New England and beyond with countless artists, including Oscar Peterson, Ray Charles, Clark Terry, Lena Horne, Dionne Warwick, Joe Morello, Attila Zoller, and Milt Jackson, and Pat Metheny, who calls Fred “a totally world-class saxophone player.” In 1996, he and Sabrina Brown founded Interplay Jazz Camp in Woodstock, VT, which provides an opportunity every summer for musicians of all ages to participate in a relaxed and supportive learning environment with an experienced, all-star faculty. The long-depressed former railroad hub reinvented itself as an artists' colony several years ago, so the 19th-century storefronts traffic more in quirky than in quaint. The Main Street Museum showcases a collection of oddities that includes gallstones said to be Elvis Presley's (58 Bridge St., 802/356-2776, mainstreetmuseum.org), and The Center for Cartoon Studies offers lectures by cartoonists such as Garry Trudeau (94 S. Main St., 802/295-3319, cartoonstudies.org). The Tip Top building, a former bakery, is home to about 40 artists' studios, the Tip Top Café (85 N. Main St., 802/295-3312, tiptopcafevt.com), and the Cooler Gallery, which exhibits the works of international artists (802/295-8008, coolergallery.biz). She's happy the town has maintained a sense of community as it's grown. "The owner of the building across the street asked me what color to paint it, since I'm going to be looking at it," she says. ELIXIR at The Freight House, the Upper Valley’s premier destination for fine dining and live music, proudly presents the club debut of jazz flutist/vocalist CYNTHIA BARRETTE, who will sing and play both C flute and alto flute on such classic standards as “Speak Low,” “Alone Together,” “Twisted” and “No More Blues” on Thursday, September 18, 2008 from 6:30 to 9:30pm. Stellar backup will be provided by FRED HAAS on piano and saxophone, JASON ENNIS on guitar, DAVID WESTPHALEN on bass, and TIM GILMORE on drums. Call ELIXIR at 802-281-7009 for reservations. Cynthia Barrette, a Hanover and Sunapee resident, has been a lifelong singer and flute player. Her first experience performing was singing with a Berkeley, CA rock band in the late ‘70s. She also played in a jazz band in Marin County in the late ‘80s. After playing classical flute and chamber music for many years, she has decided to embrace jazz -- music which speaks to her spirit and allows her to express herself freely. The songs in her repertoire have been part of her life since the early ‘60s. Cynthia has attended two Interplay Jazz week-long workshops, receiving vocal training under the legendary Sheila Jordan and Chris Humphrey, as well as a vocal course with Laurel Masse, formerly of the Manhattan Transfer, and instrumental studies under the tutelage of Armen Donelian. She is a regular student of Fred Haas and Ed Eastridge. Cynthia looks forward to her next Interplay vocal workshop with Dena DeRose as well as a total immersion Jazz Cruise in November.

Guitarist Jason Ennis is based in Berkshire County, Massachusetts and New York City and performs jazz, Brazilian and classical music throughout the Northeast. A graduate of Middlebury College (Vermont), Jason attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has performed with Charles Neville (The Neville Brothers Band), The Sonya Kitchell Band (Velour Music), Todd Reynolds (Bang on a Can, Steve Reich), Joe Morton, Tessa Souter, Nós Daqui, The Ramón Ángel-Rey Trio, Los Mofos, Freddie Bryant, The Anna Borges Group, Fred Haas, and many others. His love of Brazilian music has led him to make several trips to Brazil, including a six-month stay in Rio de Janeiro in 2006-2007. Jason is a member of the faculty of the Interplay Jazz Camp. David Westphalen is a well-known bassist, trombonist and bandleader in the Upper Valley. For many years his band Swing Machine has performed at dances, Dartmouth College functions, weddings and other private events around northern New England. After graduating with a major in music from Tufts University, he taught high school music in Vermont for two years. David currently plays bass with a number of Vermont-based musicians, including Fred Haas, Michael Zsoldos, Bob Merrill and Dave Ellis. He also works with several small combos, including a duo with guitarist Billy Rosen, and occasionally sings jazz standards. David plays trombone with the Vermont Jazz Center Big Band, based in Brattleboro, as well as the seven-piece, traditional jazz band The Almost Legendary Thundering Muskrats.

Drummer Tim Gilmore lives in Lebanon, NH and teaches at Plymouth State University, Concord Community Music Schools, Interplay Jazz Camp, and several private schools. He is an active clinician with “Adventures with Jazz,” endorsing Yamaha drums and Istanbul Agop cymbals. His recording/performance credits include Richie Cole, Lester Bowie, Marion McPartland, Sheila Jordan, Fred Hersch, Tower of Power, Stanley Clark, Pete Seeger, Shawn Colvin and Catie Curtis. He has also played percussion for TV and film soundtracks and has appeared at the Cape May Jazz Festival, the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York and Ronnie Scott’s in London. ELIXIR at the Freight House, the Upper Valley’s premier destination for fine dining and live music, presents the return of the area’s hottest new collaboration – THE ORGAN TRIO, featuring FRED HAAS on Hammond B-3, PAUL ASBELL on guitar, and TIM GILMORE on drums. The group performs its eclectic mix of jazz, blues and funk at ELIXIR on Thursday, September 11, 2008 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. (Note new hours.) Call ELIXIR at 802-281-7009 for reservations. Every Wednesday ELIXIR hosts a Jazz Dinner Show & Jam Session from 6:30 to 9:30pm featuring saxophonist/pianist FRED HAAS and vocalist SABRINA BROWN. The duo begins the evening with a different theme each week, performing songs by a specific composer or lyricist, and tunes associated with a particular vocal artist. The dinner show is followed by a jam session, and instrumentalist and vocalists are invited to participate.

FRED HAAS, a Dartmouth grad (’73) who teaches saxophone, jazz piano, improvisation, jazz history, and music theory at Dartmouth College, has performed throughout New England and beyond with countless artists, including Oscar Peterson, Ray Charles, Clark Terry, Lena Horne, Dionne Warwick, Joe Morello, Attila Zoller, and Milt Jackson, and Pat Metheny, who calls Fred “a totally world-class saxophone player.” In 1996, he and Sabrina Brown founded Interplay Jazz Camp in Woodstock, VT, which provides an opportunity every summer for musicians of all ages to participate in a relaxed and supportive learning environment, which includes yoga and meditation, as they focus on the improvisational art of jazz with an experienced, all-star faculty, including renowned musicians such as vocalist Sheila Jordan and pianist Kenny Werner. Fred has produced several CDs for his own JazzToons label, including Interplay, I Thought About You, Strike Up The Band, Friends and Telling Stories, which is a collection of original compositions featuring Haas on saxophone and piano with Gene Bertoncini on guitar and Michael Moore on bass. Fred has also recorded It’s About Time, Here’s To Joe and Live at Indian Hill with his long-time friend and musical compatriot, award-winning pianist/vocalist Paul Broadnax. Guitarist PAUL ASBELL has earned an underground reputation as a true “musician’s musician,” from his early years playing blues on Chicago’s South Side, to his present, multi-faceted career based out of northern Vermont. He has played and recorded with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Earl Hooker, Lightnin’ Slim, Paul Butterfield, Sam Lay, Pops Staples, Donny Hathaway and numerous others while living in his hometown of Chicago. Drummer TIM GILMORE lives in Lebanon, NH and teaches at Plymouth State University, Concord Community Music Schools, Interplay Jazz Camp, and several private schools. He is an active clinician with “Adventures with Jazz,” endorsing Yamaha drums and Istanbul Agop cymbals. His recording/performance credits include Richie Cole, Lester Bowie, Marion McPartland, Sheila Jordan, Fred Hersch, Tower of Power, Tiger Okoshi, Warren Vache, Stanley Clark, Pete Seeger, Shawn Colvin and Catie Curtis. He has also played percussion for the PBS documentaries “Dying to Please,” “The Dolphin Dilemma” and “Birds of Prey” and the HBO mini-series “Women in Prison” as well as the feature film “Vermont is for Lovers.” Tim has appeared at the Cape May Jazz Festival, the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York and Ronnie Scott’s in London. An accomplished, diversely talented performer, Emily Musty grew up on a milking farm in rural New Hampshire. At the age of five she was singing on stage, and throughout grade school and high school she starred in musicals such as The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and Little Shop of Horrors. She continued her stage work while earning her BA in Theatre, with a minor in Dance, at Hamilton College and started classical voice training, landing roles in staged operettas. Since launching her West Coast film career in May 2006 she has numerous commercial credits and has been featured as an actress on television shows such as MTV's Room 401, Passions, Cold Case , Untold Stories of the ER , and the Do It Yourself Network. She has starred in independent films such as Up and Down Again, Her, Not the One, and Project HEX, and is highlighted as a vocal performer in the film Sundowning. She has also held leading theatrical roles in music videos for the bands Shoeless Joe and Mars Hill and has also worked as a model for Saks Fifth Avenue. From 2002-2005, Em sang lead in the New England cover band ONE EYE OPEN. She has also performed in duo groups such as Sweet Medicine and with guitar virtuoso David Newsam, singing classic and contemporary jazz, folk, and pop tunes from Diana Krall, Eva Cassidy and Nora Jones. David Newsam is an assistant professor in the guitar department at Berklee College of Music, where he has taught since 1989. He is also a senior lecturer in music at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH where he teaches guitar and jazz improvisation. David created the jazz guitar program at the University of New Hampshire, where he teaches, directs the UNH Jazz Guitar Ensemble and coaches jazz ensembles. He is a former faculty member of the National Guitar Summer Workshop. David performs solo and group engagements throughout New England. He has performed in concerts and clinics with many noted musicians, among them guitarists Jim Hall, Bucky Pizzarelli, Gene Bertoncini and Howard Alden; pianists Dave McKenna and James Williams; drummers Ed Shaughnessy, Louis Bellson, Bob Moses and Alan Dawson; and jazz legends Clark Terry, Phil Wilson, Joe Williams and Milt Jackson. David also has extensive theater experience, including performances with Jack Jones, Mitzi Gaynor, Dianne Carroll, The Fifth Dimension, The Shirelles, and Carol Channing. Former Artistic Director of the Boston Classical Guitar Society, he currently performs with the Back Bay Guitar Trio. His recent concert appearances include performances at Berklee College of Music, Longy School of Music, Dartmouth and St. Anselm Colleges, The House of Blues and the Boston Hatch Shell. David is the author of the book Making Money Teaching Music, published by Writer's Digest Books, and the DVD “How to Accelerate Your Classical Guitar Playing,” produced by Rittor Music.
