Wed. August 20 - The debut of ELIXIR's "Jazz Dinner Show & Jam Session" with FRED HAAS & SABRINA BROWN

ELIXIR at The Freight House presents

JAZZ DINNER SHOW & JAM SESSION

with FRED HAAS AND SABRINA BROWN

Wednesdays beginning August 20

ELIXIR at The Freight House, the Upper Valley’s premier destination for fine dining and live music, will host a Jazz Dinner Show & Jam Session beginning Wednesday, August 20, 2008, and continuing each Wednesday, from 7:00 to 10:00pm. Saxophonist/pianist FRED HAAS and vocalist SABRINA BROWN, along with guitarist JASON ENNIS, will begin each session with a duo set featuring a different theme each week, performing a set by a specific composer, such as Duke Ellington or George Gershwin; or lyricist, such as Johnny Mercer or Lorenz Hart; and tunes associated with a particular vocal artist, such as Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan. The dinner show will be followed by a jam session.

Historically, the jazz jam session has been an opportunity for musicians to get together and play in a relaxed environment that fosters the creative spirit and encourages each player to reach beyond what he/she knows. Late night sessions in cities like New York have often provided fertile ground for the growth of new directions in jazz. As co-founders of Interplay Jazz, Fred and Sabrina have, for the past twelve years, provided a supportive environment for musicians to play music, practice yoga and meditation, and enjoy the spirit of learning and performing together. As musicians arrive at ELIXIR to join in the fun, they will be asked to sign in with their name and a couple of tunes that they are interested in playing. These sessions are sponsored by ELIXIR, Interplay Jazz, and two generous, anonymous donors from Hanover. Call ELIXIR at 802-281-7009 for reservations. There is no cover charge for the music.

Sabrina Brown, whose father recalls her singing as a baby in her crib, began singing in church for weddings, funerals, and services at age twelve.  Growing up in Seattle, her parents took her to classical, pop, folk, and world music concerts.  She took piano lessons and studied with some of the area’s best classical voice teachers.  At a community college in Seattle, she was a member of the Jazz Choir and studied music performance in a program called Professional Entertainment Training that included dance, music theory, and learning to play several instruments.  Sabrina’s interest in jazz was born when she opened a restaurant and began looking for the right “sound” for the business.  She fell in love with the saxophone listening to Ben Webster (unaware that the saxophone would someday play a very special role in her life!)   Occasionally, she would sit in with the musicians she had hired.  The business, raising four fabulous children, and relocating to New England in 1992 contributed to her putting her singing career on hold for ten years – until she met Fred Haas, first as a pianist, then as a band leader and saxophone player.  Her mentor, inspiration, and teacher for the past 14 years, Fred became her husband last summer.  Twelve years ago the two started Interplay Jazz Camp, bringing together renowned instructors and students for a summer intensive program that is growing and expanding every year.  Sabrina’s studies with such top jazz vocalists as Rebecca Parris, Shelia Jordan, Laurel Masse, and Dena DeRose have helped her develop her own rich, expressive sound and the uncommon ability to tell a story through each song.  Sabrina has performed with Fred for the past 14 years in the U.S. and Europe and has also performed with many other musicians, including Paul Broadnax, Matt Wilson, Jason Ennis, and Dave Clark.

Fred Haas, a Dartmouth grad (’73) who teaches saxophone, jazz piano, improvisation, jazz history, and music theory at Dartmouth College, has performed throughout New England and beyond with countless artists, including Oscar Peterson, Ray Charles, Clark Terry, Lena Horne, Dionne Warwick, Joe Morello, Attila Zoller, and Milt Jackson, and Pat Metheny, who calls Fred “a totally world-class saxophone player.”  In 1996, he and Sabrina Brown founded Interplay Jazz Camp in Woodstock, VT, which provides an opportunity every summer for musicians of all ages to participate in a relaxed and supportive learning environment, which includes yoga and meditation, as they focus on the improvisational art of jazz with an experienced, all-star faculty, including renowned musicians such as vocalist Sheila Jordan and pianist Kenny Werner.  Fred has produced several CDs for his own JazzToons label, including Interplay, I Thought About You, Strike Up The Band, Friends and Telling Stories, which is a collection of original compositions featuring Haas on saxophone and piano with Gene Bertoncini on guitar and Michael Moore on bass. It is available on the iTunes store. Fred has also recorded It’s About Time, Here’s To Joe and Live at Indian Hill with his long-time friend and musical compatriot, award-winning pianist/vocalist Paul Broadnax. Visit www.interplayjazz.com for more information about Interplay Jazz Camp and JazzToons.

ELIXIR presents jazz vocalist EMILY LANIER - Thursday, August 14th

ELIXIR at The Freight House presents

JAZZ VOCALIST EMILY LANIER

- Thursday, August 14th

ELIXIR at the Freight House, the Upper Valley’s premier destination for fine dining and live music, presents one of the Upper Valley’s hottest new talents, jazz vocalist EMILY LANIER, who performs with NORM WOLFE on guitar and PETER CONCILIO on bass on Thursday, August 14, 2008 from 7 to 10pm.  Call ELIXIR at 802-281-7009 for reservations.  There is no cover charge for the music.

A bright new talent on the jazz scene, Emily Lanier has been gathering quite a fan base in the Upper Valley.  Blessed with a natural vocal talent, the desire to sing, and a passion for jazz, but with no formal vocal training or experience with a band, Emily searched the Internet for a jazz coach in 2004.  She connected with local pianist, saxophonist and educator Fred Haas, who became her coach for several months and helped her to refine her skills as an interpreter of the jazz repertoire. She also attended Haas’s Interplay Jazz Camp, a week of music for teens and adults held each summer in Woodstock, VT.  Through Interplay, Emily has worked with outstanding jazz vocalists Shelia Jordon, Dena DeRose, and Chris Humphrey, and most recently, one of her jazz idols, Laurel Masse (former lead singer and co-founder of The Manhattan Transfer).

In 2006, Emily achieved her goal when she answered a classified ad for a jazz vocalist with the newly forming band A New Kind of Blue. The talented quartet soon had more gigs than it could handle, so last year Emily formed a second group, The Emily Lanier Jazz Ensemble, a rotating pool of some of the Upper Valley’s and New England’s most talented jazz musicians.  For more information, visit: www.EmilyLanierJazz.com.

Guitarist Norm Wolfe was born and raised in Morrisville, VT.  He migrated to the Upper Valley in 1973 when he began a 29-year stint teaching instrumental music for the Hartford School District.   Since 2002 he has been employed by the Dresden School District, where he is in charge of Sixth Grade Band and High School Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band.  He began playing the guitar in 1965 and has played in a number of rock bands, including Rockslide during the ‘80s and ‘90s.  He currently performs the jazz repertoire with six duos and several small combos and occasionally performs with the Vermont Jazz Ensemble.  Norm has studied guitar with Draa Hobbs and is currently studying with David Newsam.

Peter Concilio crafted his bebop bass style under the tutelage of Connecticut saxophonist and composer Don DeFala and studied classical bass with Joseph Iadone at Hart College. He has produced concerts featuring Maynard Ferguson, Dizzy Gillespie, Pat Metheny, and Jimmy and Percy Heath, and has performed with Richie Hart, Harold Danko, Rich Perry, and Greg Abate.  Peter moved to the Upper Valley in 2001 and plays regularly with guitarist Norm Wolfe and the Emily Lanier Jazz Ensemble.

ELIXIR presents jazz vocalist & trombonist elizabeth! Friday, August 8th

ELIXIR at The Freight House presents

DIRECT FROM NEW YORK CITY

RISING STAR JAZZ VOCALIST /TROMBONIST

elizabeth!

 – Friday, August 8th

ELIXIR at The Freight House, the Upper Valley’s premier destination for fine dining and live music, proudly presents the return of one of New York City’s fastest rising stars – elizabeth! – an amazingly talented jazz vocalist and trombonist who performs with FRED HAAS on piano and her father, DAVID WESTPHALEN, on bass on Friday, August 8, 2008, from 7:30 to 10:30pm.  Call ELIXIR at 802-281-7009 for reservations.  There is no cover charge for the music.

Vocalist and trombonist elizabeth! is one of the most in-demand bandleaders and side musicians in New York City. Her working band performs her sultry arrangements of jazz standards as well as her catchy original tunes, and her new recording, “hot & silver,” shows off her beautiful phrasing and sensitivity.  Her musicianship and enthusiasm (and dance moves) have made her a popular choice for tours and recordings with artists in genres ranging from country to indie rock to hip-hop.  In April she performed with her own quintet at New York’s Jazz @ Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club Coca Cola.  She has made appearances at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, and Lincoln Center, and on “Good Morning America” with the Metro Mass Gospel Choir and has toured with St. Vincent, opening for The Arcade Fire.  elizabeth! has performed with the Rebirth and Dirty Dozen Brass Bands at the Blue Note, Wetlands, B.B. King's, and the Knitting Factory, and has done radio commercial work and recording with countless artists, including The Mooney Suzuki, Chris Potter, and Money Mark of the Beastie Boys.

Before dropping her last name for a mark of punctuation (!), Elizabeth Dotson-Westphalen grew up in a very musical family in Woodstock, Vermont, garnering accolades in both music and theater. While at Harvard University, she studied cognitive neuroscience and psychology and immersed herself in the Boston music scene. She played lead trombone with the Harvard Jazz Band, under the direction of Tom Everett, and performed with many of the top names in jazz; a particularly special concert featured Randy Weston and Elizabeth’s recreation of Melba Liston's “My Reverie.” Other activities included touring with the nutty Hasty Pudding Theatricals, directing the jazz department and spinning records at WHRB, and playing a weekly gig with a drag queen.  (So much for the typical ivory tower education!) She has studied with Phil Wilson, Sheila Jordan, JD Walter, Michael Philip Mossman, and Antonio Hart - mostly through the curriculum at Queens College, where she earned a Master's Degree in Jazz Vocal Performance in 2006.

elizabeth! is based in Brooklyn and maintains an active touring and recording schedule. For more information, visit: http://www.elizabethjazz.com.

ELIXIR at The Freight House, the Upper Valley’s premier destination for fine dining and live music, presents the dynamic pairing of two of New England’s most accomplished jazz musicians -- guitarist DRAA HABBS and saxophonist MICHAEL ZSOLDOS – performing lesser-heard jazz standards on Thursday, August 7, 2008 from 7 to 10pm Call ELIXIR at 802-281-7009 for reservations.  There is no cover charge for the music.

MICHAEL ZSOLDOS is a saxophonist, teacher, composer, and arranger whose stylistic influences bear strong traces of the great master saxophonists Lester Young, Don Byas, and Coleman Hawkins.  He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Masters in music theory and jazz studies from Michigan State University, where he studied with Branford Marsalis for three years.  Michael has performed with Peter Bernstein, Matt Wilson, Rebecca Parris, and Jerry Bergonzi, and has opened for piano legend McCoy Tyner with his group The Other Three Tenors, which includes saxophonists Fred Haas and John McKenna.  In May 2007, Michael performed at the New Orleans Jazz Festival with the Dartmouth Gospel Choir horn section, for which he is the lead arranger.  He also plays with the Discover Jazz Festival Big Band in Burlington and the Vermont Jazz Center Big Band in Brattleboro.  Michael has been the Band Director at Woodstock Union High School and Middle School for the past six years and Chairman of the Connecticut Valley Music Festival Association.  He is an instructor at Interplay Jazz Camp.  As a composer, Michael wrote and performed a full-length score for the award-winning documentary “Birdsong and Coffee: A Wake-Up Call” (www.olddogdocumentaries.com), which has aired on PBS and Link-TV.
