Friday August 28 – Sensible Soul

 

Central Vermont's Sensible Shoes is an energetic combo with a knack for packing the dance floor.  Now Sensible Shoes members Tim Utt (vocals and guitars), Barbara Blaisdell (vocals and piano), and Pooh Sprague (vocals, bass and guitar) have formed a new group called Sensible Soul, a somewhat softer, jazzier trio.

 

Sensible Soul plays sophisticated original music as well as a mix of American songs drawn from blues, country, soul, folk, and New Orleans R & B.  Expect eclectic covers, from Randy Newman to Patsy Kline.

 

 

Saturday August 29 – Emily Cassidy

 

Emily Lanier began singing jazz in 2006 and has quickly become one of the Upper Valley's favorite jazz vocalists. Naturally gifted with exceptional pitch and a lush, silken voice, she captures the room when she sings. Often compared to Diana Krall, Peggy Lee, Chris Conner and June Christy.  Come and listen for yourself as you enjoy an evening of the great works of Gershwin, Porter, Mercer, Arlin, Jobim and more.

 

A native Vermonter, born and raised in Morrisville, VT, Norm Wolfe's guitar playing has graced the North Country for the past four decades. He has performed regularly at the Canoe Club in Hanover, and sits in on guitar as often as his schedule will allow with the acclaimed Vermont Jazz ensemble. He previously held a trumpet chair with the group. His work as music director for the Hartford and Dresden School Districts has been widely praised by students and parents alike. He performed with major rock groups throughout Vermont before choosing jazz as his venue.

 

Bassist Peter Concillo, as a young player, was inspired and encouraged by Connecticut tenor player Don DeFala, with whom he worked for many years. He retired to the Upper Valley in 2001, following a career teaching English, Philosophy and Film, and promoting jazz concerts. This summer he taught "Keeping the Jazz Journal" to participants at Fred Hass and Sabrina Brown's" Interplay Jazz Camp," and is currently working as executive producer of pianist Eugene Uman's new CD, which is slated for release next year.

Wednesday, September 2 – Evan Carey

 

Born in Lebanon, NH, Evan has lived in Spain since 2005 where he
studies and works as a flamenco guitarist under world-renowned  master
'El Entri' Aquilino Jimenez. He holds a diploma from Madrid's dedicated flamenco school, Amor de Dios, where he accompanies flamenco song and dance and perfects solo technique. He plays a variety of classic flamenco compositions by Paco de Lucia, Mario Escudero and Sabicas and also performs original material. He will be in the Upper Valley area for a limited time before returning to Spain in September 2009.

 

 

Thursday, September 3 – Doug Henry

 

Henry's acoustic blend of original and retro favorites represents an enthusiastic, eclectic journey from 60s classics to 70s folk, including a new chapter featuring his own songs.

 

 

Friday, September 4 – The John Lackard Blues Duo

 

Join us for a great night of blues with this talented duo.

 

 

Saturday, September 5 – David Newsam and Emily Musty

 

Em has also performed in musical groups such as ONE EYE OPEN, Sweet Medicine, and with guitar virtuoso David Newsam singing classic and contemporary jazz, folk and pop tunes from Diana Krall, Eva Cassidy and Nora Jones. Songs in the Key of Em , Em's first album with David Newsam is currently available.

 

David resides in Manchester, NH and teaches guitar at Dartmouth College, Berklee College of Music, and the University of New Hampshire. He recently returned from a tour of Germany with the Back Bay Guitar Trio.

 

Tuesday, September 8 – Paul Rivers

Randy Budner goes solo acoustic.  Known locally as the front man for Loose Cannons, Randy breaks up hes eclectic offering of blues, bluegrass, reggae and rock with timely doses of classical guitar, promising a taste for every palate.

Loose Cannons is the most compelling eclectic rock band to hit the music scene in the Connecticut River Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont. Kinger plays guitar, drums, harmonica and sings to all your favorites, at the same time. He is one of the only acts of this kind in the country.  A veteran of the upper valley music scene since 78' he plays a wide variety of rock, blues, alternative, and great originals that reflect the times. Known for her powerful, soulful vocals, Dixie Eastridge has toured and recorded with many well-known artists such as Tracy Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Denny Doherty (Mamas & Papas), James Cotton, Phil Wiggins, and Eva Cassidy. She was a member of the Chicken Legs Review (Little Feat/ Catfish Hodge) and supporting vocalist for the Hollywood All-Stars (Bonnie Raitt, , Rosemary Butler, Catfish Hodge and members of the Bob Seeger and Doobie Bros. Bands) As a studio singer her voice has been heard on many TV, Movie and Jingle sound tracks

 

 

Saturday, September 19 – Second Wind withTerry Ray Gould and Suzi Hastings

 

 

Second Wind has a unique but instantly familiar sound that is contagiously high energy, classy, sassy and always fun. Their performing style falls into the Easy Listening category by blending songs from soft rock, folk, pop, country charts. Arthur James is one of New Hampshire's premier Blues talents. Since moving to NH in 1990. He has played w/just about everybody on the scene either in their bands as a drummer or guitarist or fronting his own various projects. Various members of his bands have gone on to play w/the Legendary Roomful of Blues & Arthur has opened for various Label artists throughout the years either electrically or acoustic. His acoustic shows are always soulful energetic & irreverent. A Blues man with a sense of humor - "who'd a thunk?"

 

Friday August 14 – Draa Hobbs and Tim Atherton

 

Draa is a professional freelance jazz guitarist with 25 years experience.  He has performed in prestigious clubs, concerts and festivals with many noted musicians and has taught guitar for two decades.  Tim Atherton will accompany him on trombone. 

  

Saturday August 15  – Peter Concilio and Kathi Tarrant-Tafuto

 

Kathi Tarrant-Tafuto is a pianist, vocalist, and music educator, moved to the Upper Valley after performing for several years at the Waldorf-Astoria and other venues in New York City.  During a performance at Ceaser's Palace in Atlantic City she was invited to tour Europe, and has performed in many major European jazz clubs. Her CD entitled, "Portable Rainbow" features drummer Danny Gotlieb and tenor saxophonist Mike Foster. She currently teaches classical piano at the Upper Valley Music Center in Lebanon.

Bassist Peter Conciio, as a young player, was inspired and encouraged by Connecticut tenor player Don DeFala, with whom he worked for many years. He retired to the Upper Valley in 2001, following a career teaching English, Philosophy and Film, and promoting jazz concerts. This summer he taught "Keeping the Jazz Journal" to participants at Fred Hass and Sabrina Brown's" Interplay Jazz Camp," and is currently working as executive producer of pianist Eugene Uman's new CD, which is slated for release next year.

 

Tuesday August 18 – David Greenfield

 

David is a solo singer and guitarist who has been performing publicly for more than 30 years.  Before moving to the Upper Valley, David lived in Boston where he performed in many venues.  His style is a mix of Classic Rock, American Songbook Standards and Folk.

Saturday August 22 – The R Lee Trio

 

R Lee is the music director/organist of St. James' Episcopal Church in Woodstock.  He has music degrees from Oberlin and Yale. He stylizes jazz with classical idiom, fluid lines, and new age rhythms. Matt Getman a regular in the Upper Valley jazz scene brings an earthy laid back yet explosive energy to the mix often singing to ya and kicking ya at the same time

 

Tuesday August 25 – Ken Rokicki

 

Ken performs solo acoustic and electric guitar.  He plays the standards and ballads of Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hammerstein, Duke Ellington, and Miles Davis to name a few.  Ken also performs his original compositions, which he describes as "Nouveaux Flamenco."  It is a hybrid style which combines classical and Flamenco styles on a 12 – string guitar.  These compositions provide the ideal musical ambiance.

 

Wednesday August 26 – Tony Mason

Gerry Grimo is the leader of East Bay Jazz.  He is performing solo on piano and vocals.  A musician from the upper valley, Gerry has performed all over New England.

Susan Brison is back with us again with her soulful vocals and wide array of music.  She will be performing with the very talented guitarist, Ed Eastridge who is also an award winning recording engineer and producer.  He has worked for hundreds of the worlds premiere artists including Cheryl Crowe, Emmylou Harris, Diana Krull, and many others.

 

Saturday August 8 – Jambalaya

 

Jambalaya is a three-piece group that consists of a piano, harmonica, and a female vocalist.  The band specializes in the blues of varied origin.

 

Marty Young plays the piano and has been honky tonkin' in the Upper Valley professionally for 20 plus years, and has played with some of the Upper Valley's most well known party and dance bands.

 

David Nalepinski migrated from playing the drums to playing harmonica.  Over the last few years he has been developing his harmonica blues chops and has found his own pure tone.

 

Kayla Fellows, the youngest of the group, has had 6 plus years of professional vocal coaching and is natural talent.  Kayla is sought out for her smooth and controlled singing voice and is always well received at public events such as singing the National Anthem at ball games and motor racing events.

Mo'Jazz is comprised of Sharen Conner, jazz vocalist, and a variety of
musical friends. Friday night, July 31st, Sharen is joined by Billy Rosen
on guitar and Eric Bronstein on bass.  This trio will entertain patrons with several sets of tasteful standards, including ballads, Latin, and swing. These musicians
have been playing jazz for years and their combined expertise should yield a very enjoyable listening experience.

Bassist Peter Conciio, as a young player, was inspired and encouraged by Connecticut tenor player Don DeFala, with whom he worked for many years. He retired to the Upper Valley in 2001, following a career teaching English, Philosophy and Film, and promoting jazz concerts. This summer he taught "Keeping the Jazz Journal" to participants at Fred Hass and Sabrina Brown's" Interplay Jazz Camp," and is currently working as executive producer of pianist Eugene Uman's new CD, which is slated for release next year.

Steve Cornell is a talented guitarist and vocalist who has toured and recorded with many Bay Area bands.  He has appeared on the Tonight Show and has played with members of the Counting Crows, Bare Naked Ladies, and Dead Kennedys among others at various times in his career.  He is also an Emmy Award winning composer and a popular guitar teacher in Hanover.

Friday July 24 – Samirah Evans, Mark Kross, and David Wesphalen

In New Orleans, a city known worldwide for its music, Samirah was one of its most popular jazz & blues vocalists. She first performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1990, and became a regular fixture as either a leader or featured vocalist for fourteen consecutive years. She has toured Europe, Asia, and both North and South America as a headliner, and shared stages with a multitude of legendary artists from B.B. King and James Brown, to New Orleans own Queen of Soul, Irma Thomas.   Mark Kross on piano and David Westphalen on bass will join Samirah.

He is one of the only acts of this kind in the country.  A veteran of the upper valley music scene since 78' he play's a wide variety of rock, blues, alternative, and great originals that reflect the times. Friday July 31 – Mo' Jazz with Sharen Conner

 

Mo'Jazz is comprised of Sharen Conner, jazz vocalist, and a variety of
musical friends. Friday night, July 31st, Sharen is joined by Billy Rosen
on guitar and Eric Bronstein on bass.  This trio will entertain patrons with several sets of tasteful standards, including ballads, latin, and swing. These musicians
have been playing jazz for years and their combined expertise should yield a very enjoyable listening experience.

 

Saturday August 1 – The Legendary Strafford Blues Band

Tony Mason is a guitarist and vocalist who has worked as a professional musician for the last 40 years.  His experience includes club and concert work as well as school programs from kindergarten to college.  He has performed with bands but primarily he works as a solist accompanying himself with guitar and own midi sequences.

 

Born in New york City, Tony has a background in folk and blues as well as classical music.  His voice is a unique and powerful instrumeny that he is able to use skillfully.  His songs are both worldly and personal as well as topical.  His warmth makes listening to his performance an exciting experience.  The effect is often that of personally touching each member of his audience and sharing that sense of embace.  At any performance you might hear Tony playing his own original work, traditional folk and blues and songs by other artists.
